Grammy-bound!

Grammy-bound!

by Xio Axelrod

Next month, the music industry will descend upon the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles to celebrate what they consider to be the best releases from the last year. There’s always some controversy, but opinions are subjective. And like belly buttons, everyone has one.

One of my favourite bands, twenty one pilots, performing one of my favourite songs from 2016, “Heathens” – a Grammy nominee.

As I write this, I’m listening to some of the entries and preparing my Grammy ballot for mailing. As a voting member, I take this responsibility very seriously. In the first round, there are literally thousands of artists on the ballot. (I was one of them this year!) In order to make it to the final round, you need a lot of votes. This is part of the reason why you always see so many familiar names when the nominees are announced. Unlike the Billboard Music awards and some others that link the award to sales numbers, Grammy winners are chosen by their peers.

The Best New Artist award often goes to an unknown, or not-widely-known artist. For some, it can take their career to the next level. For others, it seems to be the kiss of death. Esperanza Spaulding falls into the former category. Love her!

It’s been a while since I attended the big awards ceremony. This year I figured why not? Somehow, I talked the Other Half Of My Brain (TM), Sarah Hegger, into coming with me. I warned her it wouldn’t be too glamorous. We won’t be seated between Adele and Beyonce, for instance, but it’s definitely an experience that I am happy to share. We’re sure to post photos, so check us out on Instagram: @xioaxelrod @sarahheggerauthor

My question is, who are you hoping to see perform? And do you have any favourites you’d like to see win?

Now I’m off to find something to wear.
