Going the Distance

Going the Distance

by Xio Axelrod

Next month, I’ll hit the road for the first time this year. And what a doozy of a trip it will be.

The Strip at night, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States of America - getty creative

First up, Las Vegas where I’ll join some of my fellow Spice Aislers at the annual RT Booklovers Convention. It will also be a research trip for me, as I start preliminary work on a new series. I’ve been to Vegas a number of times and every time is different. Not only because there seems to be a new hotel, restaurant, or hot spot for me to try, but because each visit has been for different reasons. The last time, I was there for a mini-writing retreat after the 2014 RWA (Romance Writers of America) conference. And I got my first tattoo.

Guess not everything that happens in Vegas…

After RT, I’ll fly home and will have roughly 36 hours to do laundry, pack, and rest up for the next leg of my journey. This time I’ll be heading across the Pond to the UK where I’ll don my music hat for a few days and perform with friends. Maybe I’ll even do a little recording. I’ll spend some time in London and parts southwest, possibly Wales as well. And then it’s off to Scotland.

To say I’m excited about that last bit is an understatement. It isn’t as if I’ve never stepped foot in Scotland before, I have. The problem is that’s all I did; step one foot across the border. Just to say I had.

This trip will be purely research. And while I hope to make it up to Duff‘s Inverness, I don’t think it will happen this time around. My itinerary will include Glasgow and Edinburgh, where I’ll walk in my characters’ footsteps and shape their daily lives in my mind. My companions and I are driving, so we’ll likely stop in Manchester on the way up, maybe the Lake District on the way back down.

I’ll cover a lot of ground in the three weeks I’ll be on the road, but I’m really looking forward to it. I have so many story ideas in my head right now, many of which take place in locations I’ve yet to visit. This trip will cover a lot of ground. Literally.

I did the maths:

Philly to Las Vegas (and back) – 4950 mi

Philly to London (and back) – 7078 mi

London to Manchester – 208 mi

Manchester to Glasgow – 217 mi

Glasgow to Edinburgh (and back) – 94 mi

Glasgow to London (not counting the stops in-between) – 414 mi

I’m tired already. =) But this is my first research trip, and I’m excited. I have no idea what to expect, no idea what I’m even doing, but I intend to enjoy every mile.

  3. Sounds great. I’ve been to London and there abouts a lot but never Scotland or Irland. Bucket list, both. Have a great time!
